Sitemap Analyzer
Audit, Fix & Build sitemap.xml

Paste any page of a website and get a full dashboard of its sitemap: how many URLs, oldest and newest pages, duplicates, file downloads, sections, a validator, robots.txt conflicts, and a fixed sitemap.xml to download. Or build a new sitemap from a list of URLs. Free, no sign-up.

Sitemap Analyzer and Generator Tool

We check /sitemap.xml at the root of the site, then robots.txt and common locations.

Common Use Cases

"Discovered - currently not indexed"

Search Console says pages are missing? Check that they are in the sitemap at all, are not blocked by robots.txt, are listed once under one canonical URL, and carry a believable lastmod.

Site migrations

Before and after a redesign or domain move, export every URL to CSV, compare sections and counts, and catch leftover http://, www or old-host URLs before search engines do.

Repair a broken sitemap

A plugin wrote unescaped & characters, relative paths or dates in the wrong format? Download a fixed sitemap.xml with duplicates removed and every date in the W3C format.

Static sites without a plugin

Hand-built sites and small apps have no sitemap generator. Paste your page list - or a spreadsheet column of paths and dates - and download a valid sitemap.xml in seconds.

Competitor research

A public sitemap is a map of a site's content strategy: how many pages each section has, what they published recently, and which PDFs and downloads they offer.

Content audits

Sort out stale content: the freshness chart shows how much of the site has not changed in years, and the URL table filters straight to old pages, files and pages with no date.

Sitemap Rules at a Glance

<loc> - required

The full URL, with https:// and the host, under 2,048 characters, with & written as & and spaces as %20.

<lastmod> - recommended

When the page content last changed, in W3C format: 2025-03-01 or 2025-03-01T09:30:00+00:00. Google uses it only if it is consistently accurate.

<changefreq>, <priority>

Optional and ignored by Google. If you keep them: changefreq is always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or never; priority is 0.0 to 1.0.

50,000 URLs / 50 MB

Per sitemap file, uncompressed. Bigger sites split into several sitemaps listed in a sitemap index (<sitemapindex>), which can itself list up to 50,000 sitemaps.

One host per sitemap

A sitemap at https://example.com/ lists only https://example.com/ URLs - not www, not http, not another domain - unless you have verified cross-site submission.

Canonical, indexable pages only

List the URL you want in search results: no redirects, no 404s, no noindex pages, nothing blocked by robots.txt, and one form of each page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why We Built the Sitemap Analyzer

A sitemap is the one file where a site tells search engines everything it wants indexed - and it is almost never looked at. Plugins write it, builds regenerate it, and nobody notices when it starts listing http:// URLs, duplicate pages, PDFs from 2014, or a lastmod that is just the build time stamped on every page. Search Console reports the symptoms weeks later; this shows the cause in one screen.

The analysis runs in your browser. The sitemap and robots.txt are fetched through RJL.io's proxy only because browsers are not allowed to read another site's files directly, and the Create tab never sends anything anywhere. The same sitemap check powers our SEO Analyzer, so the two tools always agree about whether a site has a sitemap.

The Sitemap Analyzer is part of RJL.io's collection of free developer tools - no accounts, no tracking. Pair it with the robots.txt Generator, the llms.txt Generator and the Meta Tag Generator to cover everything crawlers read before your pages.
